Roger Bone Library Department
Roger Bone Library, the nerve and centre of Hillside Teachers’ College, is situated within the College campus at Number 21 Cecil Avenue, Hillside, Bulawayo, Zimbabwe.
Named after the founding principal of then The Teachers Training College Mr. Roger Charles Bone, the Library was established at the inception of the college in 1956. It first opened its doors in February of the same year at the Heany Junction with a stock of 200 books and a few periodicals. It had a clientele base of 74 users and was manned by a staff complement of 1 fulltime and 3 part time librarians. At its peak, the Library had a staff complement of 11 fulltime members.
To date, Roger Bone Library has grown to a vibrant library service manned by professional librarians. It boasts of a collection of over 60 000 volumes, a complementary collection of backdated print journals cutting across all disciplines offered at the college. Keeping pace with technological advancements, library operations are automated using KOHA Library Management System. Library clients are also benefiting from a wide range of online academic resources carefully selected by the librarians which are, however, currently limited to open access full-text resources due to budgetary constraints.
Our professional librarians offer information literacy skills training to allow clients to effectively navigate through and utilise library resources for research, learning, teaching, and self-enrichment purposes.
The Library has a maximum sitting capacity of approximately 300 users. However, the student population has grown to over 2000. The library management team is actively looking for potential investors or development partners to aid in the expansion and redesigning of the library on public private partnership basis.
